Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (`CSNY`) began performing together in 1969 as the first true folk-rock `super-group` formed by four guitar-playing singer-songwriters from other popular bands. David Crosby came from The Byrds; Stephen Stills and Neil Young came from Buffalo Springfield; and Graham Nash was a member of British pop band The Hollies. All four members of CSNY have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, though Young`s multiple inductions were for work not involving the group.

CSNY`s music unerringly reflected the tastes and viewpoints of the counterculture as the calendar rolled over from the sixties to the seventies. By 1970, with protest against both the establishment and the Vietnam War gearing up, the group made no secret of their political leanings. The band has been continuously associated with political causes throughout its existence.

Deja Vu (released March 11, 1970) is the first album by the rock band Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and the second by the trio configuration of Crosby, Stills, and Nash. It was released in March of 1970 and topped the pop album chart for one week, generating three Top 40 singles: `Teach Your Children,` `Our House,` and `Woodstock.` In 2003, the album was ranked number 148 on Rolling Stone magazine`s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Deja Vu was greatly anticipated after the popularity of the first CSN album and the addition of Young to the group. Stills estimates that the album took around 800 hours of studio time to record; this figure may be exaggerated, even though the individual tracks display meticulous attention to detail. The songs, except for `Woodstock`, were recorded as individual sessions by each member, with each contributing whatever was needed that could be agreed upon.
